2nd National Gathering - Copeton Waters 2006
National Gathering 2006 – Copeton Waters
Following the success of the first national event, the second National Gathering at Copeton Waters State Park, near Inverell on the NSW Northern Tablelands, proved just as memorable. Held from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th October 2006, it brought together members from across Australia for another fantastic week of camping and connection.
Arrivals began as early as the Thursday prior, with the majority of campers rolling in over the weekend. In total, 48 camper trailers attended, along with 102 adults, 40 children, 18 dogs, a cat, and even a parrot—creating a vibrant and welcoming camp community.
Rob and Kevin were on hand to greet each arrival, helping campers settle into suitable sites. Many opted for powered sites, with park staff providing firewood and positioning portable fire pits throughout the campground, ensuring warm and social evenings.
The week was intentionally flexible, allowing everyone to enjoy the gathering at their own pace. Members explored the local area, including dam foreshore drives, national parks, museums, galleries, wineries, and even fossicking—one of the region’s highlights.
A standout moment early in the week was the combined effort to set up a large outdoor viewing for the rugby league finals, with members contributing equipment to create a shared big-screen experience.
The official opening was held on Monday, where Kevin reflected on the group’s growth since its beginnings just five years earlier, now nearing 2,500 members. Rob followed with a series of fun and well-loved awards, celebrating memorable camping moments, unique camper setups, and contributions from members.
Throughout the week, activities and workshops added to the experience. These included a first aid session, practical demonstrations such as trailer wheel bearing maintenance, and a popular session on satellite TV setup for camping. These knowledge-sharing moments were a highlight, reinforcing the group’s supportive and informative culture.
Entertainment was another highlight, with a special evening featuring bush band “The Rabbit Trappers” and bush poet Jimmy Brown. The night not only brought plenty of laughs and music, but also raised over $260 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter—an effort warmly supported by all attendees.
Midweek also saw the much-anticipated camp oven cooking competition, where the standard was so high that everyone was declared a winner. Special mention went to two young participants whose efforts impressed all.
Of course, no gathering would be complete without a few light-hearted moments. From creative awards to the infamous “Copeton Capers,” the week was filled with laughter—whether it was a misplaced vehicle, a forgotten towel, or even a tent peg accidentally driven into a water main, creating an unexpected geyser during pack-up.
As the week drew to a close, the final gathering brought everyone together for a relaxed farewell. Awards were presented, thanks were shared, and plans for future events were already being discussed.
More than anything, this gathering highlighted the true spirit of the group. The camaraderie, willingness to share knowledge, and genuine friendships formed throughout the week made it another outstanding success.
A special thank you went to the Copeton Waters staff for their support, as well as to all members who contributed to making the event so enjoyable.
By the end of the week, one thing was certain—everyone was already looking forward to the next National Gathering
