1st National Gathering - Copeton Waters 2005

National Gathering 2005 – Copeton Waters

The very first National Gathering was, by all accounts, a huge success—arguably better than anyone could have hoped for.

What began as an idea quickly turned into an unforgettable few days of camping, connection, and community.

Friday (D-3)
Kevin arrived early to prepare the site and finalise the details, including the now-famous showbags. Each camper received personalised laminated name tags, camper identification sheets, event forms, and a commemorative Copeton meet sticker.

Saturday (D-2)
Eager attendees began arriving early, with nearly half the group already set up. Representing multiple states, campers spread out across the large area, gathering around several campfires that evening to share stories and settle in.

Sunday (D-1)
By Sunday, the camp had doubled in size, transforming into a small tent city. It quickly became one of the biggest displays of camper trailers many had ever seen. While it was impossible to meet everyone in depth, the effort and enthusiasm to connect was clear, with people moving between campfires and conversations throughout the evening.

Monday (Day 1)
The official start of the gathering saw the final arrivals roll in. A large bonfire, prepared by Copeton Waters staff, became the central meeting point for the opening.

Kevin welcomed everyone with a brief history of the group before handing over to Rob, who presented a series of light-hearted awards, celebrating everything from longest distance travelled to oldest and newest camper trailers.

Some highlights included:

  • Longest distance travelled: Michael & Sheryl

  • Newest camper trailer: Steve & Kerrie (already well-travelled)

  • Oldest camper trailer: Rob & Carol’s 1991 model

  • Camp oven award: Ed & Donna, who had quickly embraced the camping lifestyle

The evening that followed was filled with laughter, conversation, and plenty of socialising—sometimes at the expense of a few overcooked dinners.

Tuesday (Day 2)
A relaxed day with no formal events, but plenty of activity as members visited each other’s setups, exchanged ideas, and picked up useful tips.

A highlight was the creative and humorous awards ceremony organised after a trip into town, with every group receiving a unique and memorable “award.”

Wednesday (Day 3)
The final official day brought mixed emotions, as some members began to depart.

At the closing gathering, Kevin wrapped up the event and presented the Copeton Capers award, recognising some of the more entertaining moments of the weekend—including attempts to stretch a fridge cable far beyond its limits and a vehicle left parked overnight at the amenities block.

That evening also saw a shift in camp culture, with televisions—usually frowned upon—suddenly becoming acceptable as everyone gathered to watch the State of Origin.

Thursday (Departure Day)
Goodbyes were shared, along with plans for future trips and gatherings. While some stayed on a little longer, most packed up and headed home, taking with them new friendships and lasting memories.

For many, this gathering was more than just a camping trip. While some friendships were rekindled, many more were formed. Members who had only known each other online arrived as strangers, but left as friends.

It was a few days filled with relaxation, laughter, and genuine camaraderie—setting the tone for many successful gatherings to come.

The weather was kind, the atmosphere welcoming, and the experience unforgettable. A true success by every measure.
